Recycle Batteries... a WEEE Directive Supporting recycling for a better tomorrow

The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations

Under the Waste Battery Regulations, QD Stores LTD are now offering a take back scheme for all portable waste batteries. You can return your waste batteries to any of our business premises in person (please do not post). All store locations can be found by visiting storefinder.asp.
Alternatively, you can find your local waste portable battery recycling facility at recyclenow.com
Most supermarkets and shops that sell batteries will have collection bins for used batteries, and some town halls, libraries or schools may also set up collection points. End-users may find stores in their local area more accessible.
What is a portable battery?
Portable batteries include AA/AAA cells, button cells, mobile phone and laptop batteries. Products that use these include:
  • hearing aids
  • portable cameras
  • toys
  • watches
  • hand held vacuum cleaners
  • electric toothbrushes
Please note, we are unable to accept industrial or automotive batteries. Contact your supplier or local authority for details about how to recycle these products.
Why should we recycle old batteries?
This will reduce hazardous waste (cadmium and lead) going to landfill and help reduce the toxins that can cause harm to the environment. By the year 2016 we hope to reduce the amount of batteries going into landfill by 45%
How can you recycle your old batteries
When the bin is full we will arrange for the discarded batteries to be collected by a licensed contractor who will then recycle them You can also recycle batteries at many Household Waste & Recycling Centres (HWRCs). Type your postcode into the recycle-more bank locator to find where you can recycle your batteries.
You can now recycle your old electricals with us.
We can help
We are pleased to offer our customers the chance to recycle their old electrical items.
On-line Purchases
The QD group offer to take back your old electrical products in exchange for you purchasing from us an equivalent new item. The items may be different products but must perform the same function. Examples of equivalent items would be an old toaster (wherever purchased) for a new toaster, or an old VCR for a DVD player/recorder. Customers will be permitted a 28-day period after sale to return their old item (please note that a copy of the original delivery note or invoice must accompany the returns). So all you have to do is post your old electrical item back to us. The delivery address can be found on your delivery note or invoice Please Note returns of this nature are at your own expense.
High Street Purchases
All stores within the QD group offer free in-store take back of your old electrical products in exchange for you purchasing from us an equivalent new item. The items may be different products but must perform the same function. Examples of equivalent items would be an old toaster (wherever purchased) for a new toaster, or an old VCR for a DVD player/recorder. Customers will be permitted a 28-day period after sale to return their old item (please note that a receipt must be shown at point of return). So all you have to do is take your old electrical item to the till area along with your equivalent new purchase or proof of purchase (i.e. receipt) and we will take the item from you. All store locations can be found by visiting www.qdstores.co.uk/corporate/storefinder.asp.
What happens to the old appliances?
Once in our possession we will arrange for the old electrical appliance to be collected and recycled by an approved contractor. If you’re buying a new electrical item, we will recycle your old one for free
Why recycle?
Unwanted electrical equipment is the UKs fastest growing type of waste. Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and also human health. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol) in your bin.
To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol) in your bin.
What is WEEE?
The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items. In the UK, distributors (including retailers) must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. Those establishing their own take-back scheme must as a minimum offer all customers buying new electrical equipment free take back of their old electricals on a like-for-like basis.
Find more information on WEEE recycling, and locate your local recycling centre, at www.recyclenow.com.
